M&P GEN2 coming soon?

While at my LGS this morning, they told me their S&W representative was in the other day and mentioned that an M&P Gen2 would be announced soon, but gave no other details. Has anyone else heard of this?

I want to hear more about this. Do you think they'll actually improve the trigger on this one? Also, I hope they keep the same mags and not pull a XD / XDm

This begs the question, do we *need* a Gen2? Trying to follow on the shirt tail of another manufacturer may not be what is needed.

Pretty extensive research is what led me to the M&P.. It is in my opinion, one (of a few) weapons that have an outstanding design that lends it's self to accuracy and reliability. Time being tested has placed it along side of Glock in those two areas.

(I am still fond of Glock's and believe they are an excellent choice but for me I prefer the M&P)

So back on topic, aside from the perfectly fine trigger that is often whined about (nu-necessarily), what other area could demand improvement?

I am with ElevenBravo on this one.
As a matter of fact I am now putting an APEX Flat Face trigger FSS in my CORE PORTED 9mm.
The pre-travel is not acceptable....The over travel stop and reset works great, Soooooooo it is to APEX and new trigger, springs, sear etc. for me.
In talking with APEX they said that it should reduce the pre travel by about 70%
And should be done in a week or so.
Will report after the work is finished........

In talking with S&W yesterday, they said that even if the guns come out of the PC, they still can not set the trigger to a Competition weight (i.e. 3.5 # or so) because of legal.
The told me that the trigger is set higher (around 5.5# - 6.7# and that use should work the trigger in......hahaha....
Why get a PC gun that is not ready to go.....
Anyway, I do like the gun enough to put the extra time and money into it and make it what it should be.

The trigger is the only thing that they could possible improve. In my opinion all other aspects of the M&P are perfect. Ergonomics, grip angle, height of bore axis, slide serrations, accuracy, magazine capacity of the various models, take-down, etc.

If a Gen 2 does indeed come about, i think it will include a smoother and lighter trigger, and perhaps a pair of stock night sights. Can't imagine any other "improvements"

Maybe a gen2 9c wit flat base grip that will add a round or 2 instead of pinkie extension

I would add that improved stock sights should be in the next gen, if not night sights like kdweaver mentioned. I had two of my white dots (the front and one of the rear) simply fall out during regular use at the range. Of course S&W customer service handled it quickly and sent me a replacement set, but I wouldn't say that alone warrants a whole new gen.

If it does happen, I'd guess different grip textures and trigger would be the main reasons.

I would love to see an m&p45c sized gun in 9&40 with night sights and a nickel boron finish from factory

The GEN2 is likely going to be Smith & Wesson's and General Dynamics' entry into the Modular Handgun competition. Which means it will largely follow M&P form, but the biggest change will likely be a serialized removable trigger control group like Sig P250, P320, and the Beretta APX.

THIS....

It's amazing, everybody saying "What could they possibly improve??" Until they see the new gun... I'm all for a modular platform!

The XDM is a great example. The original XD was good. The XDM is just BETTER.

+1000 on ElevenBravo post.
I love my M&P and what I love is simplicity, when the makers of a good product start to "IMPROVE" what is good, is when complication and problems starts.
And when I see trouble I step away from it.

Like Glock with the famous "Gen4" I simply stay away from it...

Like I said I love my MP but like others, I hate the trigger and the stupid loooooong magazines baseplates...those two aspects can be "improved"

I was on the phone with customer service about x-grips and I casually mentioned the gen2 rumors and if it's anything like the new Sig and she said that it is rumored but they cannot talk about anything yet. She only said that if you like the 320 then you may like what's coming. So yes I bet it's the modular design for the military's pistol competition.

I'm interested in what they can improve on, I'm not going to say the m&P is perfect but besides trigger and sights

maybe the multi stippiling of the new xd's

I sold all my M&P's and now I'm about to take the plunge AGAIN and get a full size M&P9 . I think I'll stay with the original M&P9 over any new gen 2 M&P . The only way I would buy a newer Gen 2 if they made it would be if S&W made one with where you did not have to remove the rear sight to access some of the slide internal parts .
