Talking A GREAT day at the range

Today was a GREAT day. Hung out with a buddy and burned 200 rounds on my new Sport II ! BUT for me the BEST part at the range was a Father and 11/12 y/o son shooting, Dad was teaching his son the safety rules of shooting and busting a few cans and metal .22 targets The kid was having a blast and my buddy and I told the kid how great he was doing the smile was great His dad saw my Sport and we chatted about it abit!
I ask the dad if he wanted to try it,he never shot a AR and got a kick out of it I asked the Dad if Jr. could try it,he said yes, we went over safety location etc. Put 1 round in the mag and he got to shoot it, The best part was his Million dollar smile ear to ear on him and his dad,, PRICELESS! 2 new AR shooters soon
Sorry for the long winded story but I am feeling like a million myself thinking about it GREAT DAY

Yes, I can see where that would be very enjoyable!

I recently worked the Area 7 USPSA action pistol championship in Augusta and probably the highest point was watching a 9 year old shoot his open gun. He was so small that they'd set up a booster step so that he could use the adult height shooting ports. I was talking with his dad and he told me how he started him shooting when he was 4 years old. With his dads help holding the handgun. Much of that match is a distant memory, but I'll remember that young shooter for many years.

Brian isn't it amazing how some of the simple things in life bring us the best memories . Jr. and his dad have been shooting about a year or so. Dad was instructing him every time he shot! The kid was Focused on Safety as his dad was. They are going to make great hunting buddies
My son starting teaching his kids to shoot/handle guns(Fake guns at first) since they were 3 or 4

Brian it was the Range in Milford! Pickerel Pond ! They use the area as a camp for kids,fishing/shooting etc, Plus Some guys from the PD will also shoot there! Right now the outdoor range is 50 yards but they are building a 100 yard outdoor range as well ! I the weather is crappy I can go to Maine Military indoor range in Holden

I wasn't familiar with it so I looked it up. Interesting place! I'm surprised no one took over the airfield after the Air Force ditched it. That's what happened with the one in Norridgewock. Now they have fly ins and such there. It's one heck of a nice airfield. But it should be. It was the last US stop before WW2 bombers made the flight over the atlantic. It was also an emergency airfield for the space shuttle from what I heard.

But anyway, nice place for the kids. Kudus to Maine fish and game for that! Flickr had some nice pix.

I hear you about indoor ranges in crap weather. I'm a member of CCRPC in Augusta, but I can only use the indoor range during the weekdays in business hours when few or no one else is there. My lungs just can't handle lots of smoke no matter how good the ventilation. Heck, they can't handle even a little smoke. I stop competing when the matches get moved indoors for the winter.

But most times I just shoot on my range; but not in lousy weather since I have no overhead cover. I shoot handgun and also have a 100 yard range on my land. The problem is finding the brass in the grass. Lots of it just stays there until it dies in late autumn or it's completely flat in spring. I pick up a lot of brass in the spring. I pick up a lot of spent bullets in the spring too; the ones I fired into snowbanks and are seen after the snow melts. They go into the lead bucket to be melted down.

Brian I hear you about the Air Field.. I did look at it this time, Thia was my first trip there! But They also do Ice Fishing and everything for the kids ! I am not sure what they are going to do to the airfield but hopefully good thing s
In my yard so far I can shoot about 50 ft. When I clear out a few trees and brush I might get75 ft till I hit the top of the hill! After the hill there is maybe 700 acres and it drops ,being on top no one behind me lol.. But when done I will bring in a few loads of dirt to make a real good berm. Can not be too safe

I saw that they have yellow perch in the lake. Now I know that they are considered to be a trash fish in Maine, but they are absolutely delicious. There is a way to clean them that takes about 10 seconds and it gets rid of the skin, side bones and guts and leaves just the 2 fillets on either side of the spine. My wife doesn't like fish, but she loves yellow perch. Once cooked the meat separates from the bones almost with a shake of the tail... almost.

If you want the method, it's a market fisherman's method, let me know. Even small perch are worth cleaning this way. I don't know if it works on white perch, but it definitely does on yellow.

OK. I'll do my best.

Take the perch and hold it in the palm of your hand, belly down against the palm, head pointed away from you. Take your sharp knife and laying it flat against the fish, cut the dorsal fin off by slicing into the flesh from the rear of the fin to the head. You want to remove the dorsal fin and a slab of skin maybe 1/2 wide under the fin, but you must cut into the flesh and remove that slab of skin. Do that all the way up to the back of the head. Stop but don't lift the knife, turn your knife at right angles to the cut you just made so that the sharp edge is pointing straight to the spine. Cut down to the spine but not through it. You will have almost cut the fish in 2 crosswise. Stop and put your knife down; you're done with it. What you have are 2 slabs of skin connected around the belly to each other and at the top, each side has a 90 corner that you made with the first slice. Hold the head in one hand and the body in the other; snap the spine and begin to pull the head downward in the direction of the belly and vent while holding the spine on the body. You won't go far until you see lots of strain being put on the skin that's still connected to the body. You'll need to pull the 90 corners formed by the cut down so as to "meet up" with the skin being pulled off with the head. As the skin meets up with the skin being pulled along with the head, it will be like sort of pulling a hand out of a glove, as the head is continued to be pulled down, except it will be the flesh of the fish being exposed. Continue to pull the head down and the side bones, guts and skin will be removed all the way down to the tail in one piece. What you'll be left with is the flesh, the spine, and nothing else. Dredge in flour and fry. It takes much longer to write than to actually do. Once you understand the process it's extremely fast to do. It's much easier to demonstrate than to write it out. I hope the instructions made sense. If not, ask questions.

Brian , Good write up! Ill give it a shot nest season if I bag some perch It also sounds like a good way to clean Blue Gills Cooked on the BBQ Salt/pepper.butter wrapped in tin foil Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

It sure was, Breaking in my New Sport II made a good day by itself
but seeing the kid and his dads smiles made it perfect It is nice knowing that a Crusty Old Fart like me can bring a smile to someones face lol

A good story...good to see parents working with their children on gun safety. We sometime have a trip to a range where several family members are shooting. I sure would like to have a Sport.....maybe soon.
