Wow. All these years I didn't know the .45 acp was an "inaccurate cartridge".

while the .45 ACP was ruled out over concerns of size, weight and accuracy
Many years ago I used to shoot Bullseye Pistol, a full course consists of 22 rimfire, centerfire (.32 caliber or larger). and 45 caliber. Almost every competitor shot a 45 acp 1911 for both centerfire and the 45 match. I bought a Colt Gold Cup brand new to shoot in centerfire and 45. That pistol came with a sample target, every Colt Gold Cup comes with a sample target fired from a machine rest at 50 yards to ensure the pistol is accurate. My sample target was a 5 shot group of just under 2" at 50 yards, so it is really interesting that some govt bureaucrat believes the 45 acp isn't an accurate caliber. Its also possible that was just an editorial comment from some reporter.

Did I miss it, or did the article not say why M&P was out?

I haven't been able to find anything yet that gives a reason.

I have been doing searches for why S&W was dropped and all I could find was speculations ranging from inadvertent mag drop to broken firing pins to lack of accuracy.

The M&P pistol was born when DoD announced a competition for a replacement for the M9. S&W did extensive research with both military and LE personnel to determine what was needed and wanted in the field. But then in 2014 the House Armed Services Committee scrapped the competition and instead recommended upgrading existing M9 pistols with new slides, frames and barrels as needed.

By this time S&W put so much into R&D that they felt they had a winning product and proceeded to market it to LE and the civilian market. A move that proved successful.

I have had my M&P FS for 8 years now and lost count of how many rounds I have put through it. It is also my CC firearm. I have never needed it repaired, had a mag drop nor issues with accuracy.

I admit that my gun does not go through the rigors of combat but considering the years I have owned it without issue says something for its durability and reliability.

But one of the questions that needs to be asked is how much "combat" does an M9 actually see?

SF, SEALs and 1st SFOD-D (aka Delta Force), units most engaged in close quarter combat mostly use variants of the MP5 or M4 short style platform for such combat. The pistol is essentially a last ditch weapon or carried by military police.

Despite its limited use in combat, it is safe to assume that pistols built for the military would not be the same as those for the civilian market. That added level of durability, scrutiny and quality control would no doubt add to the cost per unit.

Considering the lack of information as to why exactly S&W was dropped, my personal opinion is S&W was dropped because either the DoD wants to stay with the Beretta but needs to give the appearance of holding a competition or they are looking for a cheaper firearm.

When that came out, it was the first I read about it. It gives no actual reason, either.

The interesting point is why we know about S&W but not the other competitors, its on the stock market, where its competitors aren't, so the investors need to be notified, but nobody knows about any of the other competitors.

Follow the money! These contracts are all money driven. I have been shooting the M9 for 23+ years. It is the most inaccurate, and worthless POS I have ever shot. I wouldnt even use it as a paperweight. Thank goodness I still have the M4.

I doubt all that development won't be all for naught! I'm looking forward to see what S&W comes out with now for us civilians because it it!
