I know you can's shoot the CORE with a red dot sight on it in IDPA but can I install the top cap where the optics go and shoot it in SSP like a regular Pro Series? I want to have the red dot option for home defense and target shooting.

The C.O.R.E.'s suppressor sights are more difficult to win with. I haven't checked the 2013 IDPA rule book, but they might not allow it at a championship match, yet... Move to USPSA Open Class and you can leave the MRDS on there.

While we are on IDPA rules, is my Apex FSS trigger kit legal since it replaces the original trigger?
Visible trigger modification bumps you up to ESP.

Come Oct. 1 you can use the CORE with a dot according to the new rules. It just falls under the following competition category and can only be used at local matches.

8.2.7. Not For Competition
8.2.7.1. IDPA encourages shooters to practice their gun handling skills with commonly carried firearms. Many everyday carry firearms do not fit into the 5 competition divisions.
8.2.7.2. IDPA allows clubs to add a “Not for Competition” scoring division for Tier 1 matches only. This allows calibers smaller than 9mm, carry optics, and other pistols which do not fit into the 5 competition divisions to participate in local club matches.
8.2.7.3. All other IDPA equipment rules apply for holsters and loading device holders as well as their placement on the body. Match Directors also have the option to allow junior shooters with .22 rimfire firearms to begin strings at low ready in lieu of requiring a holster.
8.2.7.4. All IDPA membership rules apply.
8.2.7.5. Clubs are not required to implement this provision, and Match Directors are allowed discretion with implementation so that match quality remains high.

It's after October 1, so the new IDPA rules apply.

WITH optics, you are shooting NOT-FOR-COMPETITION (8.2.7) in IDPA.

In USPSA, you are in Open Division. All well and good if you're just out to have fun and practice with your gun, but don't expect to be competitive against decent quality Open Division shooters.

Add a threaded barrel and a comp, add a mag-well and a 170mm (+10) magazine extension, do extensive trigger work with an Apex FSS and light springs to drop you down in the 2-3lb range, add a non-captured guide-rod and lighter recoil spring, and then reload your own 9mm up to 165+ Power Factor (a 125gr bullet over 1320 ft/sec!!!).... Add a skeleton-rig holster, and 2 more high-cap mags. Then toss in 2-3 years of experience... and you can be competitive. The gun and mags alone with optic will be around $2000-$2300.

Enjoy!

If you roll over to the open class, powder is the key! And hard to find! So get a chrono and be prepared. To work up different loads with various powders. Where I am at its tuff to find open class powder, I have worked up a major load with power pistol and its safe no pressure signs.

I have omly 1lb autocomp, hs6, and under a lb of 3n37.... But have bulk PP coming.

Good Luck!!
Good thing steel has no power factor so any thing can work for that!

The gun as it comes from thr factory is IDPA legal and can be shot in either SSP or ESP at the shooters option. Install a FSS trigger and you are ok for ESP. The modification is an external mod so it cannot play in SSP.

Go to idpa.com and you can read the equipment rules.

Take Care

Dawson Precision has some great sights for the M&P Core. I almost bought the PC ported Core the other day but the trigger was terrible and I didn't want to spend the extra money on an Apex kit. The M&P line recently had a trigger upgrade and they have a tactile reset. I don't know if they upgraded the ported model but the one I tried wasn't.
