The department that I work for requires that our duty weapons have a safety. I have a full-size M&P 40 that does not have a safety, and I'd like to put one on it so I could use it for work. I tried contacting S&W directly to see if they would sell me a sear block safety housing for the gun, but they told me they don't sell them to the general public. I have tried numerous other businesses in my search for the part, but no one sells it and can't order it either. Does anyone here have a sear block safety housing for a full-size M&P 40, or know where I can get one? Thanks.
I tried sending the gun back to S&W, and explained that I'm LEO too, but they said they can't put them on as only the customer can make modifications to the gun after it's left the factory. They said once a gun is issued a serial number and sold by them, they are unable to make any further modifications, even if the gun is sent back to them. But of course the customer can make any modifications they want themselves.... So I'm kinda stuck here.
If I remember correctly, if you have the frame cutouts for the safety and you don't have an internal lock on the gun then you can just get the safety lever, spring, and housing and retrofit the gun. You may not even need to change your sear block.
I think you may be right. I spoke with a representative at SpeedShooterSpecialties.com who advised all I needed was the M&P Manual Safety Lever and the M&P Manual Safety Lever Detent Ball and Spring kit. Cost was $31.30 with shipping. Hopefully that's all I need. It should arrive in a few days and I'll take it apart and see if it's correct.
ScubaBoy, you were correct. The safety lever and the detent ball and spring were all I needed to retrofit my existing SBH into a SBH with a safety. Thanks for the advise!
Just yesterday I did this to an M&P40C that I recently bought. The trouble is, the safety flicks on and off way to easy. Very little resistance. I have read a few posts about modifying the safety lever so it engages the detent better to provide a more positive snick, but a am venturing into experiment territory.Have any of you done this?
Added info: I found the sticky on improving the safety. Tried it and marginally improved the "snick" to the off position. I'll work on it more later. And many thanks to the members who contributed to the "how to" thread and to the admin or mod who made it a sticky.
