I recently purchased a Shield .45 and all three of the included magazines had what appears to be a single black mark on the top of the orange follower, going the length of it, with what looks to have been made with a black marker. Is this normal, do all S&W mags that are supplied new with guns have this, as the LGS contends? They showed me two other Smiths that also had the same marks on the mags, but I know that they recently had range guns for sale that were sent back to smith for an overhaul, and I'm concerned that they may have snookered me with one. I've purchased a couple of new mags for the gun and they do not have this.
Well, as I look at that mark, I note that it follows the contour of the follower, and that's exactly the kind of mark the rim of a cartridge would make as a cartridge is fed into the chamber. We do know that every gun is test fired before it leaves the factory, maybe they use the mags that actually come with the pistol in the test fire, magazines ordered later wouldn't have been test fired and so they don't have any marks left over from test firing. Let's call that informed speculation since its a mix of what I know and a little guessing.
I saw the same exact thing on my new shield mags, and kinda wondered what it was. It wiped off with a rag, so I assumed it was simply left over from manufacturing.
Mine all had the same markings. I wore it off by loading and shooting the gun.
My spares I purchased afterwards did not.
I believe it is SW way of marking them for spares and production differing.
When I bought mine right after release I contacted SW for spares and at the time was told "all 45 shield magazines are going to production guns". I waited a couple months for some to come out on spare market.
My 40 shields (bought 2) did not have the marks on the mags.
Every M&P pistol i`ve bought had a stripe in the mag, but every spare mag i bought separately, did not.
Must be some sort of check point on the gun an mag at the factory... maybe S&W knows why (S&W LOL)
Thank you to all that answered, it certainly puts my mind at ease, I've had very good dealings with the LGS and was hoping they were not feeding me a line of BS. I did also send S&W an email regarding this, but not expecting a quick answer as I'm sure they get many emails a day.
Us old fogey`s had common sense, and we didnt NEED the internet.
The internet is just a convenience... just dont believe everything you read...
Good to know. Because the ones that came with my gun had them and new ones bought sealed in packaging did not. Easy to clean off anyways.
