Just tallied the rust voting results thus far:

Total users responding to the "rust on M&P" question: 88

Total users reporting no rust at all: 73 (83%)

Total users reporting any rust at all: 15 (17%)

Actually, we have 158 pistols accounted for.

20 of those pistols have developed rust. (13%)

138 of those pistols have NOT developed rust. (87%)

This poll is very far from scientific.

I have seen nothing from the person that voted as having 5 pistols that developed rust.

If this is true, there is probably a significant confound with these.

If we tracked all the rusted M&Ps, most would probably fall in the lot that was not finished correctly, as admitted (and fixed) by S&W.

This poll was the result of reports directly from that lot.

This poll was started over 3 months ago.

It's strange to me that we can only account for 158 pistols.

How many people might seek a forum for help when thier M&P starts to rust?

How many people might seek a forum for help when thier M&P is not rusting?

It's still fun to look at!

This morning, I was adding up the bar graph numbers of total OWNERS who had responded to the poll, not breaking it down by the individual pistols totals, as I just wanted to see how many individuals had experienced any rust on any of their M&P's at all.

Focusing on the total number of individual pistols, it currently adds up to 179 as of 2:45 pm where I'm at. I'm getting those numbers by taking the number of reports for each survey item, times the number of pistols reported on that item. So currently, 179 total pistols in the survye, with 155 (=86.5%) reporting no rust at all, and 24 (=13.4%) reporting rust. Apparently we've gotten some more folks since this morning who decided to take the poll. I'm shocked that we have 7 people who own at least 5 M&P's; that's a heck of a lot of M&P's!!!

Either way, I guess the good news is, though it'd be nice to have a more scientific poll and larger numbers, at least we know that the rust issue was not all that terribly widespread, though it has got to be annoying for those who had/have it. I'll bet that of the new M&P's coming off the line and being sold this year, the percentage that experience rust is far smaller than before. If you changed the poll to only those who had purchased their pistols in 2008, I'll bet it would be below 5%, and maybe even less than that.

2 pistols, 6 magazines-no rust anywhere, including one pistol with the slide blasted down to bare metal. Minimal cleaning on either, lubed when cleaning and wiped off after shooting.

I have one M&P & 8 mags. The pistol has rusted on the takedown lever, serial number & in the front sight dovetail. Of the mags, 6 are the old blued & 2 are the new & improved finish. The blued mags rusted on the bodies & the new mags rusted where the feed lips contact the rounds. The new mags are much more rust resistant, but still not as good as the stainless Wilson mags I use for the 1911. The gun is carried daily in any weather in a Kydex IWB, mags are Kydex OWB. I found that wiping down the rust-prone areas with some WD-40 every week keeps it at bay. I would imagine that if you live in a dry-ish climate & the gun sits in the safe you'll be fine with little to no preventive maintenance but if you're not and/or carrying it this time of year you need to keep an eye out.

I think the holster material could be a double edged sword- leather may let moisture in but it can also breathe somewhat. Kydex, on the other hand will retain any moisture that gets in if, for instance, your mags are up against your skin & some sweat runs down the mag & into the carrier.

What would be really interesting to find out....is if the people who have experianced rust are sweaty , rainforest dwelling non-gun cleaners.

FWIW....2 MP's w/ no rusty's......9 mags w/ no rust

I voted two but it is a bit tricky because I only have two, one rusted and was replaced with another that had a little rust on the inside breech face. My other one hasn't rusted. As accurate as this OP tried to be with this poll, it can still lead to misconceptions. Ideally I should have voted 2 rust, 1 no rust and 0 magazines rusted. Then, of course, there is the issue of whether the second, less used one develops rust later. I can only vote once.
