Two of my M&P pistols have NOT developed rust, nor have the magazines. And I would like to add that I can't remember then last time I cleaned them. I don't even wipe them down.

My M&P40, SN MPW2XXX, is a rust-free zone. My 5 mags are rust free also. Unlike choochboost my M&P40 gets cleaned and lubed once a week after returning from the range. After cleaning I wipe it down with a silicone rag. If I take it out of the holster more that a few times I wipe it with the silicone rag again. I'm convinced it doesn't need anywhere near this much care but it's relaxing for me and helps my feel more familiar and more comfortable with my weapon, that's why it gets cleaned.

I checked my (relatively) new MP45 last night and found that it had some rust in the forward cocking serrations just like was shown in the photos in the other thread. But, and this may be important, it was only on the side of the pistol that sits next to the leather half of an M-TAC holster. I'm wondering if the leather maybe holds moisture better than a full kydex holster like the C-TAC.

At least I think it was rust. I want to convince myself that it was really just scraped off leather where the serrations had maybe dug into and scraped across the leather during holstering. I sprayed some BreakFree on it and scrubbed it with a nylon brush and it came right off. I then rubbed down that area pretty good with WeaponShield and finally wiped the whole slide down with a silicone cloth. Will now just have to wait and see if it happens again.

I have five M&P pistols and neither has developed rust. I belive with proper care and maintenance, rust should not be an issue with any firearm. But then again, I wipe my pistols down with CLP at least once a month (those that are in the safe) and my carry weapons are wiped down at least once a week. Call me anal, but I'm Marine Corps trained.

Neither of my M&P's have rusted nor have the 10 magazines that go with them. My M&P's like to swim in soapy water every now and then also.

Both are possibilities. I don't have a MP45 but its pretty standard for front serrations to thrash leather holsters. It also makes perfect sense that if it really was rust, that it would appear on the leather side and not the kydex side. Leather is absorbent, kydex is not. That's one of the reasons why it not a good idea to store a pistol in a leather holster long-term.

No option for "none of my M&P's have developed rust"?

Yes, there are 5 of them.

How many M&P pistols do/have you owned?

I have never had any rust whatsoever on pistol or mags. I keep them very clean, and well oiled. Here in SW Florida, it just makes sense. I break it down and fully clean it once a week, even if I have not fired it that week. I use Break Free CLP to clean, and Break Free LP for automatic weapons to wipe down with inside and out. The LP won't penetrate, so no issues with getting into the ammo.

A previous poll found that over 50% of our M&Ps have a rust problem. Some guy with no grasp of reality, stated with confidence:

Quote:
The actual rate is around 3-8%
For an average of 5.5%.

Of course, his method of arriving at that conclusion was met with ridicule *. Just for giggles, let's see how close he was.

As of this posting we're up to 80 guns, 4 with rust. That's 5%. Dang! That guy nailed it, he must be brilliant beyond belief, probably handsome too.

Kevin.

Edit: References

* "But the poll including 35 members has no significance because it's flawed, and I have little faith in the estimate of an M&P armorer."

Met with ridicule, no. Met with question, yes.

As someone who uses/practices statistics and scientific method every day, I can tell you our current sample of 86 pistols is way too small to generalize and infer to the population. I'm hoping we have a better turn out.

How many would you like to see. I know a sample of 1000 is good for an entire population when they do political polls. Do you think 300 or maybe 500 would actually give you a good estimate with a reasonable margin of error for a pistol sample?
