I've got some new ones still the packaging I got from Midway awhile back that haven't ever been loaded mostly because I don't have any self defense ammo to put in them.
That being said all other mags stay loaded all the time unless I'm at the range!

With my magazine fed weapons, I load 5 magazines...one in the weapon, four at the ready. I rotate my mags every 2 months. I just can't see leaving a mag loaded for years, even if it does no damage to the mag. Just my 2 cents.

Worn out springs are caused by metal fatigue.
Metal fatigue is caused by making the metal move.
Moving metal is caused by stretching or compressing a spring beyond it's design limits and VERY minimally by simply emptying and refilling a magazine.

Springs aren't alive in any sense of the word, they don't absorb nutrients, they don't rebuild themselves, they don't grow, reproduce or even date other magazines all that much.

Do you raise your car the ground once a month to let the springs on the suspension "rest"?
Do you let the springs that power the valves within your car's engine "rest"?
Do you know how many times that spring compresses and expands every freakin' mile you drive, thousands of miles a year?

Wink Hey Ya'll!

While I do rotate my magazines every month, I am pretty well sure that this action is not really required. I read an article a long time ago (I won't venture to say what gun magazine I read it in) that recounted how a gentleman purchased a case of loaded GI issued model 1911 .45 ACP magazines from World War II. The mags had been fully loaded and in storage for 50 years. He proceeded to clear out all magazines with no failures to feed, fire, extract or eject--100% function after being fully compressed for 50 years!!

Sorry, no pics!!

For everyone relaxing the mag springs, take the whole magazine apart as well as the the striker assembly and recoil assembly because those springs are always under compression. Get to rotating!

I keep mine loaded but will unload them to put range ammo in them before I leave for a shooting session. Al except for one - I keep that loaded with SD ammo & in the gun while on my way to the range. I have 3 - 10 round 40C mags & 5 - 15 round 40 FS mags, two of which have X-Grips on them for use in the compact. I don't want to spend valuable range time loading the first round of mags. Otherwise keep them loaded at home.

I used to relax the springs in my mags on my other firearm. I would disassemble a mag and let it sit in my range bag for a few weeks, then rotate. I usually buy new springs every year or 2, depending how bad they have gotten. Sometimes i will field strip my other firearm and let the recoil spring settle too (The ones where the spring can shoot across the room if your not careful).
