I'm looking at getting a full size 9mm at some point but do want a 40 compact. Thinking of trading in my Glock 23 for one.

I went the other direction, I had a compact and did not like it. I own 3 full size 9mm and 2 mid size M&P 45s. Personal preference. I was giving up fewer rounds, did not feel as good in my hand, could carry as easy with my holster setups, weight was not that much different and could fire the full / mid size much better than the compact. Your mileage my vary.

You really only need one FS, a combat pistol, and the rest should be relatively easily concealable. In times of panic and riots, which we very well might be facing in the very near future, concealable pistols will become a staple of defense. You can't walk around with a long gun strapped to your back and expect to be left alone.

I tend to like full sized or mid sized guns. Anything much smaller than a Glock 19 is to small IMHO. I would love to see a M&P midsized come out.

Just shot a 40c yesterday, many FTF on certain ammo but not others. My 40 FS eats everything without fail!

I have a PRO, 2 Fullsize, and a compact. I find myself shooting the Fullsize the most. Perfect size.

To answer your question I would get a compact. I have three different M&P's. I am fortunate to have owned several full size firearms from different makers. I love my FS M&P but I have had other Full Size guns I like very much as well. The compact is my all time favorite compact/CCW firearm. I can live with other FS pistol but the M&P compact is my all time favorite compact.
P.S. I would also get a 9mm b/c you never know what kind of ammo will be available in the future.

My decision to add the 9c to a 9 FS was easy since I wanted to share the 17rd mags. But what surprised me was that once I had the M&P9c, my raging lust for a Shield faded a lot. S&W hit the sweat spot with their 9c.

(I can afford the Shield, but I can also afford to let the market settle down. When my LGS called to say they'd hold a Shield for me if I called by 2:00pm, I actually let it pass to the next guy. But they are still so scarce. The LGS only gave me a 3 hour window in which to reply.)
