I FINALLY got a Rugar 10/22 to add to my collection. This got me thinking. I think every multi-gun owner should own a few "institution" guns to call theirs a "complete" collection. The Ruger 10/22 is on that list. EVERYONE should own one. It's the industry standard for "plinker" rifles.

What's your top 5 REQUIRED GUNS for a complete collection, and which ones are you missing?

1. High Cap 9mm pistol (M&P, Glock, your choice)

2. Remington 870 12 Gauge

3. Ruger 10/22 Rifle

4. AR-15

5. 1911 (Still don't own one...)

Alternate: Ruger or Buckmark 22 Pistol

My top 5 "Need to acquire" list

1. M1 Garand

2. Browning High Power

3. Colt Python

4. Benelli Vinci

5. Colt Delta Elite

I would also love to add a Luger 9mm, an M1 Carbine and a .45/70 lever action. Someday I will have a .50 BMG of some type but it is not among my top wants.

I would also add that everyone(collectors) should own a Mauser action(mine's in .243win) and a Remy 700(I have one in .308 and want a .300WM).

I think you hit the nail on the head Jeff... Except the 1911 :-)

1. Hi-cap 9mm of your flavor. (9c with FS mags and xgrips)

2.. Ruger 10/22. (getting a ruger takedown)

3. AR in 5.56/223. (have a Spikes Middy)

4. Pump Shotty (going to get something)

5. Ruger or Browning 22lr handgun. (going to get later)

6. If I could add a 6th it'd be a lever action gun. Something like a Winchester model 94 in 30-30.

Happy Shooting! -Dirvo-

I think that the 1911 would be something that you'd not want if you could only have 5. I say that because they can be finicky.

Not saying you could only have 5...

I'm saying every real collector should have in his collection... These 5... These are the "must have" iconic American guns. NOT THE WISH I HAD A... list!

I got my 10/22 Ruger for my 21st birthday and it was $67.00 (I'm no spring chicken) .. Mags must have been real cheap too, I got 10 of those with it. It's still at the top of the plinker line.

Had a Colt Combat Commander "almost" as long. ..I have an M&P collection now.

870 Duck/Goose

870 Tactical as soon as they came out.

181 Series Mini 14 that eats AR's

Couple high cal. 308 semi auto, 308 bolt action, 223 Bolt action. 444 Lever action. And that's just a small titch of everything.

I'd say a Mauser 98, be it sporterized or military, should go on the list. I love the Mauser action for building hunting rifles, but they're pretty much the original design for all modern bolt actions.

My "fail safe" guns are:

Multiple 1911's
Two M&P9's
Old Browning A5 12 Gauge
Winchester 1300 Turkey Gun 12 Gauge (first short barreled shotgun I ever ran across; prior to all the "tacticool" models available today)
Old Remington Speedmaster takedown .22 auto (way predates the 10-22)
Two .22 pump actions
Two AR's
Pre-ban SKS
Several J-frame .38spl's
Colt Cobra .38 spl
Several .22 handguns
Two Sig P238's

There's more, but these are all stone reliable.
