My local sporting goods store has a Mossberg 500 (8+1) for $249, before background fees and sales tax. Seems like an incredible deal to me, given that the USMC uses the Mossberg, along with many other elite fighting units.

Yes, I'm aware of the Remington 870; the tactical equivalent at the same store is $319, not that the price difference is a concern.

I welcome any feedback.

Also, what load do you use for home defense? Thanks!

Ive got a 590, I love it.

Went with it because it had a higher shell capacity and it already had the ghost rings on it. The 870s at the shop weren't drilled and tapped so I went with the Mossberg. Not a functionality choice by any means. Both are great guns.

Either way, you cant lose. Both solid guns, arguing over which is better is pointless. Good price, good gun.

500 or 590? The 18" 500s are 5+1, the 20" 500s are 7+1 except for the 500 Mariner, which is 8+1, and the 20" 590s are 8+1. Get a 590.

The store doesn't carry the 590, and I confirmed that the gun in stock is the 500 with 20" barrel (7+1).

What is the difference between the 500 and the 590?

Also, do you think $249 for the 500 (20", 7+1) is a good deal?

I have both here. They both work and are utterly reliable. You can get plenty aftermarket parts for both platforms. I personally prefer the Mossy for the safety location reason. "Fire Foward" Easy to remember for me. The safety is on top of the receiver on the Mossy. It is also easier to use with gloves in the winter since it is larger. Some guys like it, some prefer the 870's. Either will work fine, and will eat just about anything. Mesa Tactical has plenty of great stuff for both platfroms. Mesa Tactical

Of course! Not as much as Id like to though...when I finish building my AR, I will spend a little more time on the shotguns. But for now, I just have a telescoping stock adaptor with the rail..and an AR style stock thrown on there. Its the "in case of looting after tornado in the shelter" shotgun. Next I have to put on some good sights that would be great at night since that stuff tends to hit in the night anyway.

I have a Mossberg 500 with an 18.5" barrel, I love it. The price you stated is a pretty good deal. I use No. 6 or 7 shot for home defense. Don't want to go through any walls

I got five 1 oz slugs on the stock holder and six 00buck shells on the side saddle of my 590. The 6 and 7s go through the Ithica side by side when Im shooting a clay.

Who knows, maybe one day you will need to shoot through a wall

I like the Mossberg safety when using a non-pistol grip stock. My 870 has a Knox Spec-Ops recoil reducing stock and i can actually use the safety with out having to remove my hand form the gun.

Like you said...both the 500/590 and the 870 are good guns.

Mossy 590, no questions asked...

I hate to go against the grain, but given a choice, I always perfer the 870. I have both a 590 and an 870. Both are built like brick sh*t houses, both will serve you well. The 870 is smoother and easier to clean/access the bolt. I have never had a problem with either. The 870 just feels "right". Admittedly, the 500/590 tang mounted safety is an advantage. In my opinion, the best off the shelf tactical shotgun is the 870P MAX.

But that, my friend, is expensive.

I have a mossberg 500 with pistol grip, sliding stock, and heat shield with ghost rings. Shoots clays really well and just looks plain mean for home security.
