Went With Mossberg 590 (18.5", 8+1)

Purchased a Mossberg 590 from Big 5 for $340. Actually, it is a 20" barrel, as the 18.5" barrel won't hold 8 shells.

Very excited to pick it up. Saw a pretty good disassembly video on YouTube for the 500. Anyone know if the take down on the 590 will be roughly the same?

Couple questions:

1. Should I do a field strip before taking this new gun to the range?

2. What do you use for cleaning and lubrication?

3. Do I need to buy a lot of stuff to clean it?

4. Where are the important lubrication points on this gun?

Thanks for your insights!

Not sure about the 590, but my 500 doesn't need much lube. Here's what the manual for the Mossy 500 says:

"Normal use requires only that the mechanisms be free of excessive shooting residue. Very little

lubrication other than a light oiling of internal and external surfaces to prevent rust is needed.

To ensure optimum performance, Mossberg recommends thorough cleaning of your firearm

after every 200 rounds. However, unusually dusty, dirty, or harsh weather conditions, or use of ammunition which leaves significant powder residue may require more frequent cleaning.

If the firearm is to be stored for a long period of time, it should be thoroughly cleaned and oiled.

Do not plug the barrel or store in a fabric-lined case that will absorb lubricant from the firearm, as

this may result in corrosion to the unprotected metal surfaces.

Over-lubrication should be avoided during below freezing conditions. Many lubricants thicken in

low temperatures which could affect the operation of the firearm. Exposure to unfavorable weather

or moisture from condensation requires additional care to prevent corrosion to the firearm."

Hope that helps!

Buy yourself a Hoppes bore-snake and you will cut half your cleaning time in half. I simply run my bore-snake thru a few times and lightly lube my receiver and I am done...

As far as I know the breakdown is the same.

Thanks everyone! After handling a 1911 for a while, I for some reason assumed that a shotgun would need to be kept "wet" like my Kimber. Guess not.

Make sure you de-grease it before you use it. My 590A1 had some kind of penetrating preservative lube on it from the factory and I had the machine screw holding the ejector back out and fall out during a match the next weekend. I found the ejector on the ground, but had to call Mossberg for a new screw. I degreased it and put some blue Loctite on the screw, and it's been good since.

What's the best way to "de-grease" something? I was going to give it a good wipedown with Breakfree CLP to start. Thanks for the information.

There's a product called "Gun Scrubber" which is a good degreaser. It comes in a spray can. After you degrease it, you'll have to lube the parts that need lube.

+1

Make sure you get the one marked "Synthetic safe."

I used it on my M&P and it got the thing literally squeaky clean...the trigger/trigger bar mechanism made noise.

Lubed appropriately (not overdoing it) and all is smooth as silk.
