Browning A5 Shotgun

A guy I work with was deer hunting last fall with a Browning A5 Light Twelve shotgun and he fired one shot off fine, apparently missing, then he shot again and the barrel flew off the gun. It looked like the cap that screws on the magazine tube cracked and broke apart then the recoil spring sent the barrel flying.

Well he called Browning up to see what they would do about it and they said to send it in and they would look at it. So he found packaging for it and went and PAID 20-25 BUCKS to ship it off to them. FEW WEEKS later they get back with him and say that a number of peices need replaced and it was going to cost aprrox. $350. He asked if they have any kind of warranty for this kind of stuff since it was more of a manufacturer defect than anything else and I guess he was told they have a 5-year unwritten warranty.

I was shocked, I would have thought that they would take better care of their customers than that. I guess everyone's customer service can't be as good as S&W.

An A5 is a classic shotgun. It was patented in 1900 and went out of production 10 years ago. In its last years, production was very limited because the public had moved on. It is rare to see an A-5 that is less than 20 years old.

Sure, it may have been a manufacturing defect, but it could have been an ammo issue. Someone could have been running ammo throught the gun that was too hot. That could have happened years ago and it weakened parts. Expecting Browning to repair it under warranty on it is like calling GM because your '57 Chevy needs a new transmission.

Does S&W do better on its warranty? It does on its handguns. But handguns do not normally get as much abuse as shotguns. You drag shotguns through the woods. You carry an handgun in a holster. And because it is easier to reload shotshells, lots of people do it and not all do it well. Here is the more relevant question - will Smith give the same kind of warranty on its new Turkish autoloader that it does on its handguns. Were I running Smith, it would not.
