Knoxx Shotgun Stock ... What I think

Well I got a Knoxx Specops stock for my Mossy 500 Yesterday and was able to take it to the range and use it this afternoon,

The short version - is it a bit overly expensive, yes. Is it worth the money, debatable. Does it work and do as it claims, yes. Am I going to keep it, hell yeah.

The long version - Got to shoot the shotgun a few weeks ago for the first time since getting it. I hadn't fired on in years but it was pretty much as I remember ..... point, click, back, ouch. After 25 rounds my shoulder was pretty damn sore and the next day I had a nice bruise that lasted a few days.

So I thought long and hard about getting a Knoxx Specops stock to tame recoil. At a bit more then 1/3 the cost of the shotgun itself I was skeptical about dropping the money on one. But eventually I figured what the hell I can always return it.

What I don't like about it - as soon as I installed it I noticed that some of the functionality of the gun has changed due to the new grip position. The safety isn't as easy to click off with the pistol style grip and reaching the slide release button isn't easy anymore as well. With the regular stock your thumb easily reached the safety and index finger can hit the release button without moving you hand. Plus if you want to take it apart for cleaning you have to remove the stock in order to get the trigger assembly out.

What I like about it - the collapsible stock and pistol grip do make it more comfortable to hold and shoot. It feels easier to control with this setup then it did before. But the best part is the damn thing actually works. There was a total noticeable difference in felt recoil with this thing on there. After shooting my shoulder felt just fine which is a major improvement. I was even brave enough to try shooting it while holding it away from my shoulder just using the grip. Needless to say it worked out just fine and the stock never came back and hit me, the recoil was almost all absorbed by the spring in the grip and my wrist was fine. I wasn't even daring enough to try this with the pistol grip the shotgun came with for fear I'd break my wrist.

Like I said, it's expensive for what it is. $130 is more then 1/3 the price of a mossy 500 so saying it's worth the money spent is debatable. But it does work and function like it claims to, there's no denying that. I'll most likely keep it as it does what I bought it for. So yes I spent more money on a stock then I probably should have for such a low priced shotgun, but being that it does what I wanted it to I'm just going to deal with that. And if anyone asks if I'd recommend it even though it costs $130 ..... the answer would be yes.

Good review and i have to agree, expensive but effective. My wife and I both have them on our 870's. Last range trip she went through 20+ full load slugs without even flinching. The only drawback is the crowd of range users she gathers while pounding away, smiling all the time. Nothing like a little woman with a cannon and the ability to use it to draw a crowd.

I have the Specops for my Remy and I LOVE IT. If I could, I'd make my 870 my "carry gun". I notice the large reduction in felt recoil and if I load low recoil shells, well, it's like shooting .223

My 11 year old daughter shoots it with no trouble at all.

My favorite set up is the Knoxx Specops stock, a Knoxx four round side saddle shell holder and some Federal flight control 12 ga 00 buck. PURE JOY!!!!

I have one on my 870 and though I like it...I'm not 100% sure it's really "all that". I got it so I could shorten the LOP and lighten the recoil so Paula would, at least, TRY shooting it.

It does both so, I guess I'll keep it. I'm just not sure it really reduces the recoil all that much. One thing it does do, IMHO, is increase muzzle flip.

The first time I took both of my Mossbergs, a 500A1 and a Maverick Model 88 both with SpecOps stocks, to the range I went through one box and then let a few folks (from a crowd of 6-7) fire off a few each. The positive comments were almost unanimous:

Much easier recoil, no bruising.

Almost no muzzle flip, instant followup shots.

Cheek slap, some preferred shoulder slap.

With the SpecOps installed I prefer the safety on the Model 88's trigger guard better than on top of the M-500A1's receiver, and the 88 is cheaper too. I paid less for my 88 with SpecOps than my 500A1 without.

KRW.

P.S. I prefer the action of the 500A1 a bit better.
