Well, I just purchased a 590A1 (51520) Compact 6 shot from Buds for $480 total ... it's being shipped to Cabela's next week for my pick-up. This will be used for home defense. Here are the specs:

- 12 gauge

- 5+1 capacity

- 18.5 inch barrel

- 38.5 inch length

- 13 inch length of pull

- 7 1/4 lbs

- Metal trigger guard

- Metal safety button

- Drilled and tapped receiver

- Parkerized finish

- Ghost ring sights

- Wood stock (bantam)

It's tough figuring out what kind of shotgun (or any gun) you want because there are so many choices. Once I figured it would be a Mossy (which was a difficult choice), then came the struggle for which Mossy. I struggled with getting either a 500 Persuader (for $330) or stepping up and getting this; decision made and I can't be more excited to shoot it.

Anybody have one? What are you thoughts on the 590A1?

Very nice. I read your post Income Tax post earlier and it got me researching shotguns and I already have a couple that never get any love.

Yes, I hear you ... I hate when reality comes crashing into the situation.
I needed a new shotgun, especially for HD. My old Ithaca (all 47" of her) has done some great things for me over the years but it's not practical for HD. My reality check was getting through my wife ... I was either getting a new M&P .45 or getting a shotgun.

Have the 590A1 20" with 7+1 tube. I like it, in comparison to my friend's 870 the controlls are all in better positions (safety on top, pump release where you can move it without moving you whole hand). The pump action is not as smooth as the 870 but I think it will get better the more it is used. This is my first shotgun and now that I have it I realized it might have been better to get the shorter and lighter barrel for HD - it is a bit unwieldy in tight spaces. That's why I'll be getting the Keltec KSG down the road.

I consider cancelling ( I actually saw the same gun you posted after I purchased my order) but it would actually cost me $53 more because my price was $461 (plus other stuff). I keep adding $50 more and then another $50 more ... when does the madness end?

Only you can decide, but if it were me, I'd cancel the one and order the other.

Not me. I'd stick with the model you already have ordered.

Since your stated objective is home defense. You'll find that 2" and pound and a half of steel and ammo hanging off the front of your shotgun really does make a difference in target acquisition time as you pie a doorway or corner. The shotgun is the most viscous of CQB weapons. He who accurately shoots first with the shotgun at close range usually wins the fight.

Having run Standard Mossberg Ghost Rings on both the 20" and 18". I can tell you the the good old Standard Orange Ramped, Winged Mossy Ghost Ring is...Fast Fast. As fast and accurate as you'll ever need. A tritium front is available should you so desire.

You can also get a one shot extension for the 18". For 6 in the tube.

It's been my experience that the 18" are just a whole lot easier to maneuver and carry for any length of time.

If you need a light (and its a good idea) get a surefire forend and skip the cheap ass Mako forend and goofy Bayonet lug crap. (As well as the goofy wanna-be Blackwater contractor paw print logo. which given how all the much bally-hoo'ed contractor B.S. turned out in the end. Is not really something I'd want on the side of one of my weapons.)

You will have fun shooting it. I have a Persuader set up a little different than the short 590A1 I posted on the other thread. The Mossberg is a good product for the money.

I had an easier time figuring out who I was going to marry versus figuring out what kind of shotgun I wanted.
Anyway, I went back and forth and decided to keep my original order. Toughest damn decision I've made in a long time but I'm very excited.

You'll love the 590A1, albeit mine is a bit heavy, probably because I put 6 shells of #1 on the left and 5 slugs on the right side of the stock, which is a M4 collapsible; makes it a bit easier to navigate through my house, which is its purpose. It's my primary go to gun for HD, with my AR a close second. You might want to put a quality sling on it and get a training course with it; you'll find it a very versatile weapon.
