The kick is not as bad as you might think. With the birdshead grip and fired from the hip, your arms act more like springs. With the barrel ports, there is not a lot of upward recoil and the whole action is more of a straight push rearward.

Here is my son shooting the Birdshead Mossy as we gauge the upward recoil impulse. It does indeed shoot straight back.

Here I am with the Flaming Birdie when making some 25-yard shots.

What kind of splits are you getting? Have you compared them to a shouldered Benelli/SLP/etc?

Is the ported barrel factory or aftermarket?

A Serbu Super Shorty would be even smaller...

Benny,

I have not made any speed comparisons to any of my other shoulder stock shotguns. The purpose of this shotty was to be able to shoot from almost any position, and is for in-home use only. You might call it the nuclear option for my home defense.

The barrel porting was done by me. I do quite a bit of gun smithing and this was actually one of the easier projects.

Although the Serbu Shorty is indeed smaller and more maneuverable, I was trying to stay off the NFA path.

Amazing the kick is not a mule kick It looks like as easy to throw around as a pistol I would not want to be on the receiving end lol Thanks for the reply and pics

I suppose that I have to say that my birdshead mossy still kicks the same as any 12-gauge pump action shotgun, but the dynamics of the recoil impulse are completely changed with the addition of the grip and the porting of the barrel.

Unlike a shoulder stock shotgun, this shotty does not abruptly stop as the butt slams into your shoulder, and it also does not send shockwaves into your wrist like a normal pistol grip shotgun. I can only say that it has an entirely different recoil feel, as your arms and body work differently to manage recoil. The recoil "jolt" associated with a 12-gauge slug is not unpleasant at all, and you feel more like your arms and torso are acting as a shock absorbing spring. Your body does not feel bruised after shooting dozens of rounds, and you don't have the associated arm fatigue that you get with a normal pistol grip design.

If you have a pistol grip Mossberg 500, I would highly recommend the Raptor birdshead grip from Shockwave Technologies. One note of caution is that I find the standard Raptor grip to be too slick, and this can allow your shooting hand knuckle to make contact with the trigger guard so that is why I added the Hogue finger grips to mine.

Thanks for replying. It's been a long time since I shot a Serbu or pistol grip only shotgun and I recall it being quite awkward.

Not only is the Serbu an AOW, it only holds three rounds. I don't know what I was thinking. Obviously you should get a Judge!

I added the folding stock to this Mossberg 500 pistol grip 12 Ga. pump shotgun.
