Are you stuck with one caliber if the SHTF?

I got into a discussion the other day with a shooting buddy about survival. He owns ALL 9mm and 7.62X39 guns. For economy, he only shoots 2 calibers...

In a survival situation, after Walmart has been closed for a few months, and ain't reopening any time soon, you'll hopefully have your stoclkpile of ammo... You'll ALSO be looking to get MORE ammo any chance you get. Ammo will be used as currency, self defense, and for food gathering.

My arguement was to have at least one reliable weapon in 22LR, 9mm, 40 Cal, 5.56, and 12 gauge. I think those calibers will be the most availible in a post-apocolyptic world, with 45 ACP and 7.62X39 running a distant 6th and 7th.

If your only weapon is a 357 Sig, or a 10mm... You're screwed!

I own a few 22LRs (one rifle and one pistol), a few 9mms (M&Ps), a 40 (my competition gun), two ARs, and three 12 gauges. If I had to go mobile, I think I'd take a 9mm and my 22 Rifle!!!! I'd have a hard time leaving the AR behind... but I think I'd scavenge more 9mm and 22LR ammo along the way in a long-term survival situation.

I'm NOT talking "month one" of SHTF, where self defense and Bugging-In is my first option... I'm talking well down the road, where I might have to move on to greener pastures, and violence in the streets has diminished.

Just one of the many exercises in logic that fill my thought when I'm bored between clients at work...

What do YOU think?

I keep (other than 22) only US military calibers.

I'm even reconsidering my own post...

A 40Cal handgun will feed, chamber and fire 40 S&W, 357 Sig, and 9mm!!!

The case will bulge/split on the 357 Sig and 9mm rounds, and accuracy past 10 yards will suck... But it will feed/fire/shoot all three!

Food for thought...

That's what I've been saying for years.

Also, having 357 and 9mm barrels that fit your M&P40 will go a long way toward alleviating the drawback you mentioned.

I stock up big on 22 and 5.45x39... Also have a fair ammount of 556 and 762x39 and 9mm and 45... 12 guage used to be for me but now i realize its too bulky and not a 30rd mag... 22, 9mm and 5.45 39 are my current priority, but besides 40 cal i own all the others

.22LR would be the single most important SHTF caliber.

For a shotgun, 12ga certainly, but there is still a lot of 20ga and .410 floating around. The .410 isn't such a great fighting round, but it will get food easily without destroying it.

I'll agree that for handgun calibers, 9mm & .40 S&W would be the two most readily available after .22LR of course. Guys with 10mm could shoot .40 S&W if they had to.

As for rifle, there are a lot of good choices, .223/5.56 & .308/7.62 are going to be the most plentiful. Other than that .22-250, .243, .270, 7mm Rem Mag and maybe .30-06 or .30-30 would be the others to consider.

Good point! I'm a competition shooter, so I have at least 6 mags for each caliber M&P, and about 6-7 AR mags... I don't see any reason to own more. I know guys that own dozens of AR mags (and pistol mags), but I don't plan on wading in LOOKING for a fight. I've got 4 AR mags loaded at all times (116 rounds), and 2 pistol mags for my 9FS and 9C. If I went into a purely defensive posture (no more evening USPSA matches!), I would have everything fully stocked up... including my three 20-round M&P 40 mags!

As far as stocking up on ammo goes, stock what you own. I own 9mm, 5.56/.223, .22, 12 ga. These are all fairly common. I do own a .41 Mag. I know it is very uncommon but hey, I just love the round. I reload and have plenty of components stored up for it.

I plan on picking up a .308/7.76x51 within a year. After that I am done with calibers. I will buy firearms only in the calibers I have.

If in a SHTF situation while scrounging, I come across ammo that is in other calibers I will take it to barter with. Lead will become more valuable than gold or silver.

I like to keep tabs on all the people stockpiling gold...

Should melt down pretty well for bullets in a pinch!

I'll do Okay for a while, 2 12ga shotguns, 1 AK (sold the other to buy my M&P) couple 38 specials, 9mm, 2 .40s 2 bow & arrows, and the guy next door makes Civil war era Howitzer Cannons and has an incredible Gun collection. actually his house is built around a garage sized gun safe.

I would add .38/.357 to the list. One revolver will use to rounds and there still plenty of both rounds kicking around.

Just ordered a .40cal f/s slide (I have the rest of the stuff required) from s&w for use on my 9mm f/s as an alternate caliber. That will give me .22, 9mm, .40cal, 45acp in pistols, and .223/5.556 & 12ga for rifles.
