I think the one on the left would work best. It fits the best and no give away drawer.

You can also get PVC pipe with end caps that will glue on and stay water tight. Oil guns for storage, add ammo and you're good to go. Hide in the woods or back yard. Keep a saw on hand for opening later.

Place the drawers at the upper part of the staircase if you live in flood prone area.

My concern is more aimed at LEO confiscation more than bandits. I have a decent safe and the ability to repel intruders, but a LEO with a gun sniffing dog is a different story.

Ammonia is bad ju-ju for the sniffers.

This is not the first I've heard of keeping a fire breather under the steps:

The one of the left seems like a pretty darn good idea. As long as you never mentioned it to anyone, I doubt anyone would find it. It's hard to find things you don't know exist.

Pardon the poor cell-phone pics - this is something I saw in a store and it caught my eye. Looks like a standard bookcase, probably 5' tall or so, but the top molding conceals a thin drawer. Could be useful for pistol, jewelry, papers, etc:

I would think a search team with a metal detector would have no problem finding a gun stored in a secret drawer.

And assuming in a SHTF scenario you remain in your house...

You have some interesting ideas there, and I have been thinking along the same lines myself, but sadly I live in a townhouse, with limited options.
What about hiding a pistol in a heating /AC duct? Crazy idea?

Nothing like a good floor safe with heavy furniture over it. Use a slider underneath the corner diagonal to the pivot point

One Big Ass Mistake, America!

No fooling. Lately we had a whole small town flooded near here, and the RCMP went 'fishing' for guns through evacuated areas, seizing 'unsafely stored' firearms. They didn't use metal detectors, and allegedly only grabbed guns in the open, but who knows?

A lot of preppers have been vindicated when local disasters happen...hurricanes, tornados, floods, ice storms and etc. You don't have to wait for a nationwide meltdown... Keeping firearms tucked in hard-to-find spots is a good idea.
